Japan International Cooperation Agency ( JICA )https://www.jica.go.jp/)has pursued international exchange initiatives between Japan and other countries as its Strategic and Global Partnership Training Program, and each year designers who are active around the world visit Kyoto to attend a program of studying  “Japanese design and traditional technique”.

Seikado has collaborated with Mexican designers for two consecutive years in 2016 and 2017. In 2016, we collaborated with Omar Ramos, a director and designer of the design studio FOAM, to produce a tin sake drinking set  “TOTEM” and presented it at Tokyo Design Week of the same year. In 2017, we also collaborated with Patricia Castillo to produce a tin sake drinking set  “VIDA MIA” ( “MY LIFE” in English) as well. Fortunately, this sake drinking set designed by Castillo was swimmingly commercialized and presented, overlapping the hammering technique of Seikado. We are highly motivated to start sales on orders of ”VIDA MIA” with the limited amount you can buy.

Patrica Castillo(パトリシア・カスティーヨ )

She is a Mexican Industrial Designer. Passionate about having extensive experience with and thinking out design, Patricia Castillo (hereafter referred to as Patricia) makes her curiosity and logic lead to a creative process to realize a concept which emphasizes a cultural background and a physical attribute of the project.
Recently, she completed a study on Japanese design at Kyoto Institute of Technology, where she had had an opportunity to collaborate with Japanese artisans and design studios around Japan.
While Patricia, as a designer, currently works for the UN Association, the Ferrero Group, and GK Kyoto, she works as a design consultant of her alma mater the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro ( http://www.uaq.mx/ ).

The sake drinking set “VIDA MIA” is the designer’s interpretation of Japan’s complexity, which represents the simplicity of a balanced lifestyle. A philosophy of Ikigai explains that we need to find equilibrium in everyday situations to live a better life. For this reason, we share and celebrate different moments of life with a special drink (sake here), though our cultural background, roots, and culture are different.
In doing so, “VIDA MIA” enables us to have an unique experience while we drink sake, either because of the nice material’s texture, or because of the irregular shapes. In fact, we can hold the cup in a way we feel most comfortable and can experience a very unique and personal ritual different from everyone else’s.

As for the production of the sake drinking set “VIDA MIA”, the unusual design was mixed with the traditional technique of Seikado through the challenging collaboration between the artisan and the designer, which led to finding a new approach to work for each other. This demonstrates that “VIDA MIA” is meant to be an organic and playful work, just like our life itself.

Techniques

“VIDA MIA” is made of a tin alloy bullion for special drinking cups or dishes adding silver, which is one of the greatest successes of Seikado the old established metal crafts shop. This material is clean, whitish, relatively hard, durable, and resistant to corrosion, which is only seen in our studio. Forging enables this drinking set to have the fine, faint, and shiny surfaces which are inexpensive, suited to mass production, and incapable of creating by casting. The texture as well as beauty in the appearance feels nice. The stony lumpy surfaces, the sandy fine-textured ones, and the brilliant shiny ones have suppleness to the skin. While this drinking set includes the three sake cups, these ones have a different tin surface. We hope you will enjoy the differences of their texture and their beautiful shapes which fit comfortably in your hand.
